This morning we took a half day to do some exploring out with our sampling sites. Some of the staff here at Mukhrino told us about a lake that we could walk to, situated about 1-2 hours walk away. We set off for this, after seeing that if we walked straight down a track (a very wet and peaty track it turned out), we would reach it. After a good length of walking we arrived at the lake, where it was breezy and it was enough of a wind to keep the biting mosquitoes away. We all had a good swim in the lake – lovely peaty and warm water!!
In the afternoon it rained a lot, Joss and I were doing some measurements of topography along the PEATEDGE transects – this first method, involved string marked at 50cm intervals, a measuring tape, spirit level and inverted giant hammer as a flat surface to work on. This was going fine until the spirit level failed and being pretty damp, we headed back about 7pm and found the sauna ready.
